California Disabled Parking Privileges
Permanently disabled people going outside of their home state can obtain travel placards. These are valid for 30 days for out-of-state residents and up to 90 days for out-of-state residents visiting California. Note that disabled people who travel in California with disabled parking licenses from other states without acquiring a California travel placard are technically breaking DMV rules. Out-of-state disabled parking badges are frequently honored by law enforcement.
Disabled Parking Privileges in California
Anyone with a disability parking placard, plate, or badge may park in any marked disabled parking place, such as those with the international wheelchair symbol or blue curbs. They can also park in short-term areas marked with a green curb for an infinite amount of time.
These badges also allow you to park for free in areas designated for residents or businesses, as well as any metered space. In addition, the badge activates assistance at a gas station. A disabled person's vehicle must be filled at self-service rates by attendants. The only exception is when the service facility has only one employee.
It should be noted that a person with a handicapped placard does not have the right to park in the wheelchair access zones denoted by stripes next to disabled slots. They can't park in the red, yellow, or white curb spaces, either. Private spaces identified by a name or license plate number are likewise prohibited.
Application for a California Disabled Parking Badge
A person who wants a disability parking badge, whether it's a placard or a license plate, must apply to the DMV and pay the appropriate fees. The initial disability plate and permanent placard are provided free of charge. Each temporary placard costs $6.00.
The candidate must obtain and complete the Disabled Person Placard or Plates Application. In most circumstances, a licensed physician, surgeon, chiropractor, optometrist, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or certified nurse midwife who is familiar with the disease or impairment must sign the medical component of the application. A chiropractor can only certify a person's handicap if they have lost one or both legs or have significant limitations in their leg usage.
